Chinese Tropical Pumpkin (Certified Organic)

Grown by Twin Oaks Seed Farm – 120 days – Cucurbita moschata

Chinese Tropical Pumpkin has a rich creamy texture, high dry matter and brix (sugar) readings, bright orange interior and a lot of flavor (pumpkiny and nutty). At harvest, fruit color is a mix of pink, green and blue, with a white bloom (like the white outer layer on some blueberries). During storage they ripen to a deep tan color. The pumpkins have moderate to deep ribs and average 4 pounds. Chinese Tropical Pumpkin has good downy mildew resistance and was one of the top performers (in terms of yield, disease resistance and flavor) in Twin Oaks’ 2014 and 2022 trials. They keep pretty well in appropriate storage conditions.

This seedstock comes from a Taiwanese hybrid called Crowning, via Hawaii grower Glenn Teves. It may have been grown for several generations in Hawaii.

Shapes range from flattened to round to stout barrel-shaped, with some necked offtypes. We’re in the process of doing selection work to improve the uniformity of shape, and have probably eliminated the necked types (with large seed cavities) in our intensively-selected 2023 hand-pollinated seed crop. The packet size we’re offering here is from that crop, and quantity is limited. The one-ounce and half-ounce sizes are from a slightly less selected 2022 crop – expect up to 10% necked offtypes.
