Zephyr F4 Summer Squash – Research Sample (Ecologically Grown)

Grown by Living Energy Farm (VA) – Cucurbita pepo – 52 days

We started selecting from Zephyr F1 because we observed it to be more resilient than most pepo–species summer squashes. This year, in our trial of 12 pepo summer squash varieties, both Zephyr F1 and Zephyr F4 indeed did by far the best (and about equal to each other), in terms of productivity, longer survival of plants, and vine borer tolerance. The squash in our F4 population don’t have the distinctive green-and-yellow bicolor of Zephyr F1, or they have it very faintly. Colors range from bright to pale yellow, with some showing alternating stripes of both.  We plan to keep selecting from this exciting and promising population.
