Yamato Cream Strain II Watermelon (Certified Organic)

Grown by Brenda Callen at All-Farm Organics (VA) – 85 days – Citrullus lanatus

We sought out this watermelon because it has the best gummy stem blight resistance in the whole USDA watermelon seed collection (over 1200 varieties), according to a 2005 study by Dr. Todd Wehner of NC State. When we grew it out we were surprised to discover that this is also a sweet and beautifully colorful variety. Interior color ranges from yellow to yellow-and-pink to red. Fruits are round and average about 10 pounds. The USDA seed bank description says Yamato Cream Strain II (PI 279461 in the USDA system) was donated by Japanese Seed Growers Cooperatives in 1962. 12 seeds/gram.
