Grown by Twin Oaks Seed Farm (VA) – Triticum aestivum
Appalachian White was bred by David Marshall at the Agricultural Research Station (ARS) in Raleigh, North Carolina, and released in 2009. He focused on resistance to pre-harvest sprouting, and worked with the North Carolina Organic Bread Flour Project to get feedback on quality during the breeding process. This is a modern semi-dwarf wheat variety that has good resistance to lodging. We’ve grown Appalachian White for two years now at Twin Oaks Seed Farm, and have gotten good crops both years. We love the taste of the fresh milled wheat (we grind it ourselves every few weeks or as needed), and it has become the main whole wheat flour used for bread at Twin Oaks Community. Alexis Zeigler of Living Energy Farm designed the small combine prototype we’ve used for harvest (using it in the Twin Oaks fields is helping him trouble shoot and refine the design). See livingenergyfarm.org/the-easy-reaper/ for more information about the combine. Quantity is limited this year – we hope to have more seed available in the future. 930 seeds/ounce.
Note: The shipping and handling cost for all orders is $6.00. The extra shipping expense we pay to send bulk sizes is included in the prices listed for this variety ($3 extra for 1#; $6 extra for 5#).
