Grown by Twin Oaks Seed Farm (VA) – Ocimum bisabolenum – 55 days
This tulsi is the most commonly grown type in the U.S. and has been for many years. There has been a lot of uncertainty and confusion about its origin, but we feel fairly convinced by arguments that it originally comes from Ethiopia, a country with a largely temperate climate due to elevation. Temperate Tulsi shares many of the medicinal and culinary properties of the more tropical tulsi varieties found in India, but is much earlier to flower. The smell is fruity and aromatic and it makes a wonderful and relaxing tea with a rich vanilla flavor. Harvest whole branches for drying any time after flowering starts. This variety has also been called Kapoor, which we believe is something of a misnomer (kapoor means camphor in Sanskrit; and camphor doesn’t seem like a good description of the aromatics). 1580 seeds/gram.
