Grown by Brenda Callen at All-Farm Organics (VA) – 125 days – Cucurbita moschata
Vigorous, extremely productive and downy mildew resistant plants produce beautiful and tasty neck pumpkins of varying shapes and sizes (approx. 7-15 pounds). At harvest they are a patterned mix of orange, green, tan and white colors – the green goes away in storage. This is a long-season variety but there hasn’t been any problem maturing the fruits in Central Virginia when planted by the end of May. Edmund Frost has been working with this seedstock for several years, selecting especially for eating quality, beautiful colors, and resistance to splitting. Not quite as much of a dessert squash as our butternuts, but still very good eating, with notably aromatic flavor, sweetness, and a good bit higher brix and dry matter than you can expect from a supermarket butternut. Fruits from the 2023 seed crop at Twin Oaks had a median brix of 9.5 and an average dry matter of 11.7.  350 seeds/ounce.
