Grown by Twin Oaks Seed Farm – 120 days – Cucurbita moschata
New release! Developed by Edmund Frost from crosses between South Anna Butternut (75%) and Chinese Tropical Pumpkin (25%) starting in 2017. The concept for this project was to create and identify a promising (and broad) genetic base from which to select an improved regionally adapted butternut. This cross has consistently stood out above a handful of others made using South Anna. Edmund’s selection goals have included improved keeping quality, more concentrated fruit set, and higher yields – while maintaining the excellent eating quality, downy mildew resistance and general resilience of South Anna. Like South Anna, Bakers Branch Butternut is an excellent dessert quality squash with high brix and dry matter content. It has slightly finer texture, not quite as deep orange interior color, and slightly different flavor (more nutty than floral) compared to South Anna. Most fruits are 2-3 pounds. Exterior color is a deep tan with a unique pink hue (likely coming from Chinese Tropical Pumpkin). Bakers Branch is the name of a creek, a neighborhood and a road near Twin Oaks Seed Farm’s main fields. Selection and improvement for this new open pollinated variety are ongoing. Thanks to the Southern SARE grant program for providing funding support for this and other squash breeding projects at Twin Oaks Seed Farm. 203 seeds/ounce.
These seeds and their offspring are open-source, and not available for private intellectual property ownership. Pass these words on when you pass the seeds on!
